We have pulled together a list of the most frequently asked questions around Milkaid and lactose intolerance below which we hope you find helpful.
What is Milkaid?
Milkaid contains lactase enzyme, a safe natural enzyme that is usually found in the digestive system. It works by breaking down the complex milk sugar lactose, into two more easily digestible sugars – glucose and galactose.
What is lactose?
Milk, dairy products, infant formulas and breast milk all contain a complex sugar called lactose. Lactase is the enzyme our bodies normally produce to break down lactose into the simpler sugars, glucose and galactose, so that we can absorb it.
What is lactose intolerance?
Lactose intolerance is the inability of the body to fully digest lactose. Lactose is a type of sugar which is found naturally in milk and some other dairy products including: yoghurt, cheese, cream and small amounts in butter. Lactose can also be found in some pre-made products such as cakes, pancake mixes, breads and pastries as well as appearing in some medications. Medications alone are unlikely to trigger symptoms although they can contribute to your tolerance levels of lactose. In order to digest lactose an enzyme called lactase is required. Individuals who are lactose intolerant lack the lactase enzyme naturally in their body. As a result, the milk sugar, lactose is not digested properly (maldigested) which can give rise to the symptoms of lactose intolerance. Lactose intolerance is generally harmless, although it can cause people some discomfort and embarrassment.
Why does milk cause lactose intolerance?
Milk is a primary source of lactose, a sugar found naturally in milk and dairy products. Lactose is the initiator of the symptoms of lactose intolerance. Individuals who do not naturally have enough lactase will not be able to digest lactose effectively as they cannot break it down efficiently in their body.
How do Milkaid Drops work ?
Milkaid works by breaking down the lactose in milk prior to its use. Simply add three drops of Milkaid lactase enzyme to 500ml of milk, gently shake, refrigerate for 24 hours and it is ready to use in cooking, beverages and cereals, hot or cold.
This will reduce the lactose level by approximately 70%. For an even greater reduction add 10 drops, which will reduce the lactose level by approximately 96%. Once treated you can use the milk just like ordinary milk for cooking, on cereals or in beverages. Do not use more than 64 drops in any 24 hour period. The difficulty to digest lactose becomes more common as individuals age as the small intestines reduce the production of lactase.
